Crystalite UV Water Purifier for Low Resource Settings in Uganda

Access to safe water is fundamental to the development of any community. Safe and reliable water restores hope and unlocks potential. In Uganda, national safe water coverage is estimated at 66% with 42% coverage in rural areas. Over 80% of the population in Uganda live in rural areas and 76% of the rural population receives water from a point water source. These point sources include bore holes and solar pumps that pump water from underground.

With 3.575 million people dying each year from water-related disease, our current water crisis is one of epic proportions. At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by those suffering from illness brought on by limited access to safe drinking water, poor hygiene and sanitation.

Ultraviolet light has for long been used for big water treatment systems for buildings and commercial facilities. Ultraviolet (UV) water treatment works by exposing microorganisms (such as cryptosporidium, giardia lamblia and more) to UV radiation, via a special UV light bulb, which disrupts their DNA and disables their ability to replicate.

Having a system like ours being utilized by people will ensure that we achieve the targets of the Sixth Sustainable Development Goal, “Ensure access to water and sanitation for all”. Video Pitch
